Here is a spreadsheet of what things cost a while ago and some suppliers.
Its amazing how quickly sundries add up
It looks complete which is a bonus these days. It would be a shame to scrap & strip
From the trees (and rust) I assume its in the Cape?

That's a comprehensive list.

I'm not sure where it's originally from, but at the moment it's in the North-West, near Hartebeespoort.

If what it needs to get it running is within your budget I'd go for it.

Especially because you don't need to do change of ownership right away which means you can sort all the roadworthy stuff out slowly.

If your intention is just to get it running from A to B, it might be worth it, but think of it this way - to restore this to anything like good condition will set you back at least another R15k for a spray job (at least!), then you can probably expect the standard things to require fixing before a roadworthy. Quite soon you'll be at R30k total before you've done very much. If this particular car has some sentimental value or you're planning to do a labour of love and keep it forever, then it's worth it, otherwise forking out full restoration costs (in 2015 terms) on a run of the mill 1275E is throwing away money. That's my 2 cents opinion

Sound advice Abri, thanks.

The intention isn't to restore it - I'm not that fond of Clubmans, it's so that I have at least one running Mini, and possibly as a backup car for one of the kids to use while at varsity. My daily ride is also quite high mileage and having a spare running car is useful if something needs doing on that - takes the time pressure off.

All I'd want to do is remove the bull bar (and set the winch up as an engine hoist), replace the bumpers, stop the rust on the rear panel from spreading and replace the bonnet lid if I can fine one cheaply. Obviously I'd need to fiddle with the wiring, but that doesn't scare me, I'm happy to tackle that, and any mechanical stuff.

There's way too much work to do on my Mk1 to be distracted by another project car.

Well, I was chatting to my brother-in-law over the weekend, and he's had a look at the car and decided it's tattier than he remembered and he'll take R8000 for it. So it seems without haggling, I've got a slightly better deal, and I'll take it at that price. He even offered to bring it down, but I suspect I'll be up there before he's next down here.

Thanks for all the comments and advice guys, it's appreciated Smile

Good to hear Colin, just remember that my name is on the wheels if you ever decide to let them go Wink

Start a build thread or rather a get it running thread so we can watch your progress!

Well, I did an EFT a couple of weeks ago, and my brother-in-law has hired a trailer and he and his son are doing a road trip this weekend, and I'll have Griselda (or Esmerelda)* parked in my garden soon. I might need a bigger car-port soon. Actually, I'm going to need to sell a car or two soon. I keep 'replacing' the old ones but somehow keep the old ones too.

* I had decided on Griselda, but the car is green and Esmerelda hints at greenness by sounding a bit like emerald. Griselda is snappier though. I might need a new poll...

Awesome news Colin.

Keep us updated on the progress you making.

I think for a start Griselda and once she's going then Esmeralda. Esmerelda sounds prettier
