all help appreciated - Paul Ely - 09-06-2017

Hi everybody.

Paul here. Proud owner of my first mini. Im a bit young and dumb so go easy on me. So lets get into it. I am not a pro but i know how to use a spanner and a screwdriver and how to follow instruction. So what was the first problem with my pink mini? Overheating obviously. So heres the plan before i spend any money on 3 core radiators and electric fans.

Flush radiator and get new caps. Check mixture and make sure im not running too lean which ive heard causes heating issues. And last i will check that the timing is not too retarded which ive heard also causes an engine to run hot. Oh and dont forget to check the oil level in the dashpot.

If there is anything else anybody could think of please all info is so greatly appreciated.

Happy mini days
Paul
oh its a 1275e

Aaah i forgot to mention i removed the thermostat and put in a blanking sleeve/tube

Hi Paul. Think you got most of the basics covered. When does it overheat? Long drives, sitting in traffic, hot day, alway etc...
This may shed more light on the problem as well.

RE: all help appreciated - Paul Ely - 09-07-2017

Hi minitim. Thanks for the reply. It heats up on long drives. When doing 80km/h plus. And when engine is under load. When climbing hills the gauge goes up. When going downhill on highway it will drop again. I have just checked the fan. It is blowing air through the radiator and out through the wheelarch. I am now going to sit and tinkertoy with all the rest.

If i start it from cold and let it idle. It would take about half an hour to 45 mins for her to start overheating.

Does the radiator also get hot? I'm thinking it could be the water pump not pushing enough water.
I know on my old Uno it had a water temperature valve that would only open if the water was hot enough, and sometimes it just rusted shut so the engine ran hot while the radiator fan spun like crazy and nothing actually happened.
Basics to check with water problems would be;
-Rust in the water (clean all the water out and do a fresh mix after other fixes)
-pump (replacement likely)
-sensor clogged (doesn't sound like the problem)

if you aren't running out of water then I'd assume the Welch plugs are fine for now.

One of the highly skilled mechanics in Cape Town told me that it is really dangerous to run a Mini without a thermostat, as it actually takes longer to get to a good running temperature and will do damage. His solution for a standard motor is a well-running cooling system without serious modifications.

Thanks Vinay. I dont mean to sound ungrateful. I will look into it. However i cannot seem to source an original mini thermostat that cuts off the overflow on the cylinder head. Only after market wax types which do not block off when engine is at proper operating temp. I will try and check if i can mcguiver this thermostat to fit inside my blanking sleeve and see how that goes. Thanks buddy.

Where are you located Paul.
Thermostats can be obtained locally.

Im on the east rand near wadeville.

Ok ladies and gentleman. We have succeeded. Retarted timing. Its a hot day in Jhb. I just drove it like i stole it for half an hour. Heat gauge dead on center. Happy days. Thank you everybody for your input. Very much appreciated. I am a happy man. In love with my little car!!!!

Welcome Paul!

Glad you got it all sorted.

Put that thermostat back in. A nissan 1400 thermostat one also works. I have one in my clubby.
