If the car was built in SA, then an 850 motor would suggest an early mk1 as they had switched to 1000cc motors in the mid 60s before the mk2 was launched. The Mk2 also had external door hinges, but they had the square taillights instead of the small round taillights on the mk1s.
I agree with Dominique, if the goal is to have a nice daily runabout, then you really can't go wrong with the little 850cc motor. There is a local mini fanatic in CT who drives an 850cc mk1 everyday and he says it does the job perfectly. Also if it is a mk1 it really would be worth a lot more if kept standard.
