This isn't really true. It does require some understanding of the tariff codes and making sure that customs knows what to charge duties on. Otherwise parts can arrive within a week.
Another option is the companies that import parts from the UK and stock them. There is one that a lot of people recommend, they're very good, although you'd need to call them as they will be able to better help you over the phone:

Another new option is the company A-series Garage. It is run by Dominique and Jared (both classic Mini owners and active members on this forum). I've imported parts with them and their service is good.
