When my car got banged the tie rod pulled out of the tie rod end on one side (and poked a hole in the boot which is a pain to get sorted again). Inspection shows only 3 or 4 threads were active.
I have always felt that the tie rod ends are not nicely seated into the ball joints, but could only get straight wheels by turning them almost all the way out. While rebuilding now, my new rolling chassis had sort of straight looking wheels.
After removing the drum setup and installing my 7.5" disk setup the wheels were facing out again, totally cockeyed.
After much checking and measuring, which didn't really help anything, I removed the arms and lo and behold these arms don't match the standard steering racks. They are also quite a bit chunkier.
So if you have disked hubs and arms make sure you have the matching steering rack. (I just swapped the arms)
The 10 - 12mm makes a huge difference on the wheels
